Botenlauben (castle ruins)

The ruins high above the town, in the district of Reiterswiesen, are the oldest landmark in Bad Kissingen and offer a magnificent view. It is thought to have been built around 1180. It enjoyed its heyday when the minnesinger Otto von Botenlauben and his wife Beatrix von Courtenay moved into the castle in 1220 – with famous guests such as the poets Wolfram von Eschenbach and Walter von der Vogelweide.

Every two years, at the third weekend in September, the Botenlauben Festival revives the spirit of the Middle Ages.
